Where did you find that step in the manual?

Re: volvo esl emulator
Hi,
I'm having the same problem with a Volvo SCL emulator.
First attempt.
Link open.
Connected to working existing SCL, positive connection direct from battery.
Put ignition key in - SCL unlocked.
LED went from flashing to permanent on.
Disconnected emulator with key still in place.
Soldered link.
Connected emulator with the SLC unplugged.
LED flashing.
Second attempt.
Went through same procedure but this time actually started the engine.
This time the LED stayed off on connection of power.
Put the ignition key in and got message 'STEERING FAILURE STOP SAFELY'
Car wouldn't start of course.
On plugging the old SCL in, all back to normal.
The manual says 'Turn ignition on - if everything is ok, LED must go on, all necessary data already grabbed and stored'.
The LED goes on fully at putting the key in, at the same time as the SCL operates, which suggests it is good to go.
Has anyone got any more info on whether the ignition sequence should be completed, including turning engine off and removing the key?
Thanks

Means nothing is actually stored.
May be mistake at "Disconnected emulator" step - must disconnect it as fast as possible. Because if 2nd power up occurs while JMP is open, all collected data is possibly lost.

Re: volvo esl emulator
Thanks for comment Girt.
Yes, I took it that the first attempt had failed, and it probably was caused by a second power up as you say, because I had the + lead connected to the battery via a croc clip and may have reconnected inadvertently.
The second attempt though had appeared to have programmed correctly, because after resoldering the link and reconnecting, the LED stayed off this time.
On inserting the key, the LED gave a short flash (1/2sec as the manual says), suggesting that all was ok, but it was followed by the 'STEERING FAILURE' warning.
The quandry, does programming just need the initial key insertion (SCL unlock), or does it need a full sequence of key in, engine start up, turn off, and key removal (SCL lock)?
Any comments much appreciated.

Re: volvo esl emulator
Current situation.
Placed toggle switches on the power + line and the shorting link to ensure clean breaks.
Emulator gives the impression that it has programmed correctly by the LED changing from flashing to being on permanently at key insertion.
Emulator LED stays off when link shorted and reconnected with the car SCL unplugged.
Key insertion makes the emulator flash once, but get warning message 'STEERING FAILURE - STOP SAFELY.
Have tried all combinations for programming, like:- key in only, key in and then out, engine start and stop, etc. but same result each time.
From the way that the emulator flashes once at key-in, I've come to the conclusion that it has programmed, however the CEM is not getting back what it expects.
It's a Volvo V50 2008 1.8L petrol.
Sorry, but tell me I'm wrong somebody, $60 sorry.

Emu powered from OBD or from original SCL wires?

Re: volvo esl emulator
It was powered directly from the battery for + line and from the ground at the SCL, which according to the V50 wiring manual is 31/6 to chassis same as OBD ground.

Re: volvo esl emulator
Ok on ground connection problem.
I have now wired the supply, +12V and ground, from the OBD socket.
Again, the emulator appeared to program correctly, but failed again 'STEERING FAILURE - STOP SAFELY', the same as before.
The emulator flashes once at key insertion, so is responding to the CEM, just not correctly.
Is it possible that there is a sensor which tell the CEM that the old SCL unit is still attached but not plugged in?

Re: volvo esl emulator
CEM must manage power when emu installed (in working mode).
